Patrick’s Success with Opportunity Partners
Writing His Own Story: Patrick’s Success with Opportunity Partners
For Patrick, writing letters is more than just a pastime. It is a meaningful way to connect with those around him. Each day, after finishing his shift on the production floor at Opportunity Partners’ Koch Campus, Patrick returns to Maryland House, an OP Group Home in Richfield, where he settles into his favorite after-work routine: writing what he calls his “paper copies.” These handwritten letters are filled with stories about his day, dreams for the future, and cherished childhood memories. Patrick sends his letters daily to friends, family, and pen pals.
Patrick’s journey with Opportunity Partners began in 1982. Over the years, he has developed valuable skills, working full-time on OP’s production floor, and living at Maryland House. As a positive role model, Patrick strives to connect with those around him. His love for routine and friendship shines through in his letter writing, and his beautiful penmanship shows the care he puts into each note. Visitors to Maryland House often see Patrick’s letters peeking out of the mailbox, a delightful reminder of his efforts to bring joy to others.
Bergen, an OP staff member and one of Patrick’s pen pals, shared how these letters have brightened her life: “Before I received Patrick’s letters, I didn’t know much about him. We quickly bonded over our shared love of Diet Coke, and he asked if I’d like to get a few letters from him in the mail. Now, seeing a letter from Patrick is one of the highlights of my day. His words remind me how easy it is to spread joy and inspire me to connect with others.”
Patrick’s letters are more than just pieces of mail; they are reminders of the power of human connection and the joy found in life’s simple moments. His story shows that Opportunity Partners’ mission is not just about advancing the quality of life for adults with disabilities but also enriching the lives of everyone in our community. Through his letters, Patrick fosters relationships, spreads happiness, and creates a sense of belonging. His actions prove that even the smallest acts of kindness can have the biggest impact.
