A Friendly Face for 20 Years: David’s Story at Lunds & Byerly’s
For many, a job is just a job. But for David Cushman, it is a source of pride, purpose, and community. This year, David is celebrating an incredible milestone as he achieves 20 years of employment at Lunds & Byerlys in Edina.
David’s journey to long-term employment was not always easy, but his determination never wavered. In 1999, David first connected with Opportunity Partners, receiving In- Home Services before transitioning to OP’s Community Employment Services a few years later. Over the years, David gained valuable experience in various roles, including taking tickets at Edina High School, working behind the scenes at a YMCA summer camp, and holding positions at Best Buy, the University of Minnesota, and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Each experience helped him develop new skills, build confidence, and gain greater independence.
In 2005, David secured a job at Lunds & Byerlys through Opportunity Partners Employment Services. Starting as a maintenance worker, he quickly realized this role was not for him. Instead of settling, David took a bold step by approaching his manager and asking if there were other roles better suited for him and his skill set. His initiative and determination led David to his current position in courtesy and bagging.
Each day, David arrives ready to brighten someone’s day. With a warm smile and friendly demeanor, he greets customers, carefully bags their groceries, and provides exceptional service that keeps shoppers coming back. “My favorite part of the job is seeing and helping repeat customers and getting to know new ones,” he shares. Over the past 20 years, David has become more than just an employee, he is a familiar face that customers trust and appreciate.
When asked what advice he would give to others seeking long-term employment, David keeps it simple yet powerful. “Work hard, have good interactions with customers, and help answer any questions they may have.”
Outside of work, David’s passion is baseball. Whether cheering on the Minnesota Twins at Target Field or traveling to Arizona for spring training, David is always game-ready. David’s work ethic proves that individuals with disabilities can succeed in long-term employment when given access to the right support and opportunities. His hard work and perseverance continue to inspire those around him. Congratulations, David, on 20 years of dedication. Keep up the great work!
