Opportunities to thrive

By Julie Peters, Communications Director −

Ed working at Micron

In 2010, Opportunity Partners helped Ed land a job at Micron Metalworks, a precision metal fabricator in Ham Lake. With on-going job coaching from Opportunity Partners, Ed has thrived in his position.

Encouraged by his employer, Ed even had the opportunity to advance his skills by taking sheet metal coursework at an area technical college. Micron Metalworks invested in Ed, and Ed has responded as a dedicated, hard working employee. He currently works 18 hours per week and loves being challenged on the job, tackling a variety of projects and learning to use complex equipment.

Companies that create job opportunities for people with disabilities are not only helping people gain valuable job skills but are also welcoming those individuals to be part of the company’s team.

By hiring a person with a disability, companies gain a dedicated workforce, broaden their diversity initiatives, and support the local community.

In spite of the efforts of many, the unemployment rate for people with disabilities remains very high. At the same time, there is increasing awareness and support at the federal level and locally to boost disability employment.

In order for more people with disabilities to have a chance to succeed in working independently, we challenge every business in our community to examine how they might succeed at integrating individuals with disabilities into their workforce.

Partnerships with companies like Micron Metalworks are essential so more people with disabilities can succeed in working independently.
